The Illini Union acts as a center of spirit and memory to the University of Illinois Urbana - Champaign. To students, it is a center of activity supporting a myriad of functions resulting in students spending much time within its walls. That time builds memories which the students take with them past graduation into their professional careers as alumni.
The intent of the design is to respect the memory and spirit of the Illini Union while enhancing the activities supported by the Illini Rooms A, B, C.
A panelized ceiling is being installed. The design respects Georgian traditions while providing a framework for present and future functional demands. The ceiling is panelized to maximize ceiling height while suggesting traditional Georgian coffered ceilings. Wall-washing lights highlight the existing perimeter architecture and dimmable down-lights provide flexible lighting to the rooms. A demountable pipe grid assembly, recessed into the ceiling reveals, will allow for a multitude of options for hanging theatrical lights and speakers. Projector screens and recessed ceiling mounted projectors are being placed within each room to support multimedia presentations in individual rooms or the entire three rooms combined, as necessary.
