Forty-five years ago, Vail was little more than a dream of Pete Siebert and a few of his friends. Today Vail is North America's top ski resort destination with services and skiing second to none. And tomorrow, Vail will become even more refined.
Long divided in two architectural styles, the Village of Vail is undergoing a thorough transformation that will reconcile the modernist 2.27 acre Lionshead Core area with the original, traditional Bavarian Vail Village. The existing gondola building and a lodge will be replaced with: a new 4-star 36-room Rock Resorts hotel; 71 condominiums and penthouses ranging from 1,500 sf to 8,000 sf; and luxury residences ranging from 1,500 (2-bedrooms, 2.5 baths) to 3,600 sf (4 bedrooms, 4.5 baths). A new town square with a one-stop skier services center, new dining and shopping, a seasonal ice skating rink and spa facilities as well as centralized loading and parking are also part of this grand redevelopment.
The Vail Front Door is a plan to ensure that visitors experience a world-class destination before they ever set foot on the mountain. This large complex renovation includes massive below grade construction at the village base to supply the mountain with back-of-house services. Additional project components: new base area luxury ski club for 500 members; renovation of the Lodge at Vail including a new 11,000 sf spa; new underground Founders garage for 110 spaces topped by a park; state-of-the-art 20,000 sf plaza skier services facility, and 13 new 4,000 sf ski-in/ski-out chalets.
Additional projects include design recommendations for 11 surrounding buildings and a new skier bridge.
